Obama brokers surprise peace deal between estranged neighbours Turkey-Israel

New York, Sat, 23 Mar 2013 ANI

New York, Mar 23 (ANI): Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel were restored after US President Barack Obama brokered a surprise peace deal between the two countries, helping secure an Israeli apology for a 2010 commando raid on a Turkish ship, while Israel was enforcing a naval embargo on Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally extended his country's regrets and offered compensation for the raid that resulted in nine deaths, to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan with the help of Obama, in a three-way telephonic conversation, the New York Daily News reports.

In response, Turkey restored full diplomatic relations between the two nations, which were once close allies in the fractious Middle East, the report added.

Meanwhile, Obama, who made a series of symbolic visits in Israel before departing for Jordan on the final leg of his Middle East trip, paid his respects at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Israel, stating that the memorial illustrates the depravity to which man can sink but also serves as a reminder of the 'righteous among nations who refused to be bystanders.'
