Chinese media, public welcomes 'glamorous' appearance of new 'folk singer' First Lady

New York, Mar 23 (ANI): The Chinese social media has welcomed the international debut of the new First Lady Peng Liyuan, who garnered even more attention than her husband Xi Jinping as embarked on his first trip overseas as China's president.

Praising the fashionable navy blue outfit Liyuan wore while stepping off the plane in Russia, media has pointed out the fact that the famous folk singer has a marked difference with her predecessor's low profile, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the paper, although the enthusiasm for Liyuan comes at a time when government officials have been buckling under the call for simplicity and frugality by the Jinping, media have welcomed the whiff of glamour Liyuan appeared to bring to her new role.

According to the deputy editor in chief of the Hong Kong Commercial Daily, the quest for a 'graceful First Lady' has come to an end with the arrival of Liyuan.

Another message on a micro-blogging site said that 'China's First Lady is no longer an old lady', and hoped for a refreshment of China's future like the appearance of the first lady.

The praise of Liyuan evoked the fuss over Michelle Obama in 2008 and built on expectations by many political analysts and diplomats that the new First Lady will bolster and soften her husband's image by becoming the first wife of a Communist Chinese leader to play a role similar to that of a U.S. first lady.

According to many analysts and diplomats, Liyuan's self-assured appearance alongside her husband is the latest signal that he is trying to establish a confident and personable leadership style that contrasts with that of his predecessor, Hu Jintao. (ANI)
