Mandela in hospital for check-up

United Kingdom,Politics, Sun, 10 Mar 2013 IANS

London, March 10 (IANS) Former South African president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela spent Saturday night at a hospital in Pretoria after being admitted for what was said to be a scheduled check-up, media reports said Sunday.

No updates were given Sunday on the current condition of the 94-year-old leader, BBC reported.

President Jacob Zuma's office said earlier there was no indication that there was any reason for alarm.

The former president spent 18 days in hospital in December. He was treated for a lung infection and gallstones.

Zuma's office said Mandela had been admitted for a check-up at a Pretoria hospital Saturday afternoon and the aim was "to manage existing conditions in line with his age".

Mandela, who served as South Africa's first black president from 1994 to 1999, first contracted tuberculosis in the 1980s while in Robben Island prison.

He has been in hospital on three occasions in the past two years. In January 2011, he was treated for a chest infection.

The former president has been rarely seen in public since retiring from public life in 2004.
