Indonesians being lured with special India travel packages

Jakarta, March 8 (IANS) A special 'Visit India' package has been devised for Indonesian tourists who want to stop over and visit shrines and monuments on their back from Haj, according to Indian ambassador Gurjit Singh.

Singh said one has to experience India first hand to know how incredible India is in terms of diversity of culture, history, travel destinations, religions, and climate.

Speaking at a seminar here on Indian tourism - `Know India Series', Singh said that efforts have been made by the India Tourism Board to devise a special package on historical Muslim shrines/monuments for those Indonesians who wish to combine this package while proceeding to Haj/Umrah.

Medical Tourism and the Buddhist circuit were other potential areas, he added.

The seminar was held here Wednesday by India Tourism Board and Embassy of India, Jakarta.

The event was attended by over 150 people including travel agents based in Indonesia, representatives of airline industry, hotels, diplomatic community, media and other stakeholders in the tourism industry.

'Know India series' is a programme which seeks to inform in an interactive manner on the exciting travel destinations in India, the various tour packages available which includes, among others, specialised packages like adventure, wild life, water sports, mountaineering, pilgrimage, cuisine, and medical, ayurveda, Bollywood, spiritual, and Buddhist circuit.

Madhu Dubey, regional director of India Tourism Board, Sydney, gave a detailed presentation on the various packages.

A slide show on obtaining Indian visa was presented by the Indian embassy. Indonesians travelling to India can obtain Indian visas within 24 hours of applying for visa. Indonesians also have the facility of obtaining Visa on Arrival at four airports in India - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

Singh also indicated that the Embassy of India and the India Tourism Board were planning to institute an annual award for the best performing travel agent in Indonesia who sends maximum Indonesian tourists to India.

On the issue of direct air links to India, Singh said he was hopeful for its early realization as it would have a direct bearing on both inbound and outbound tours.
