Bogota, March 5 (IANS) The Colombian Navy has seized 1.564 tonnes of cocaine which were being smuggled by boat to central America, officials said.
The navy recently intercepted the boat in the Caribbean Sea off Colombia's northern Bolivar province, Xinhua reported.
"Four suspects, who were operating the boat with no name or port registration, noticed the presence of the Cartagena Coast Guard units in the area and fled, ignoring orders from the military personnel to turn off the boat's motors," the navy said Monday.
Authorities said the crew members threw the cocaine into the water and one of them jumped into the sea. "A search and rescue operation was begun immediately, with no results so far."
The boat was taken to the port of Cartagena, where the authorities found 63 sacks containing 1,540 packages of cocaine, which would reportedly have a street value of approximately $40 million.
