Over 22,600 observers for Kenyan elections

Kenya,Immigration/Law/Rights,Politics,Defence/Security, Sun, 03 Mar 2013 IANS

Nairobi, March 3 (IANS) Kenya's electoral body said Saturday it has registered 22,600 local and international observers to monitor Monday's general elections in this east African nation, Xinhua reported.

A total of 20,000 domestic and 2, 600 international observers from Kenya, East Africa Community, Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), COMESA, the Africa Union, EU and the Carter Centre have all been accredited, said a top election official Issack Hassan here.

Kenya's March 4 vote will be one of the most closely watched in Africa as an anxious campaign has divided the nation while raising fears of a repeat of the bloodshed which followed disputed 2007 elections.

Over 1,100 people were killed and 6,00,000 fled their homes after the 2007 polls.

The Monday's polls will be held for the first time under the new constitution approved in August 2010.
