Washington, Feb. 27 (ANI): More than half of Americans think sequestration is a bad idea, even as there is also a strong appetite for reducing the deficit, according to a new poll.
According to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, 52 percent of those surveyed called the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts set to kick in Friday a "bad idea," while only 21 percent said sequestration is a good idea, reports Politico.
Separately, 50 percent of those surveyed called the looming cuts "too severe," but another 46 percent said that it is "time for dramatic measures to reduce the deficit".
When asked how Congress should deal with the deficit, 14 percent said they favoured the current cuts, 39 percent opted for deeper cuts and 37 percent said Congress should pursue fewer cuts.
Republicans have demanded deeper cuts to address the deficit and said that current proposals fail to derail major debt-drivers, like entitlements - while Democrats have said that any deal to avert sequestration should include revenue-raisers like closing tax loopholes.
Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said thinking about President Barack Obama's negotiations with congressional Republicans over budget issues makes them less confident about the trajectory of the economy; 16 percent said they feel more confident.
The survey of 1000 adults was conducted Feb. 21-24 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.1 percent. (ANI)
