Islamabad, Feb 7 (IANS) The top commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Thursday met the chief of the Pakistan Army to discuss matters to "improve security in the region", the US embassy here said.
The embassy said the meeting between Gen. John R. Allen and Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani took place in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, Xinhua reported.
The meeting was part of a regular series of engagements aimed at "bolstering the military-to-military relationship between ISAF and Pakistan", the embassy said.
"The officials discussed a variety of issues relating to their mutually shared goals of peace and stability in the region and strengthening cross-border cooperation," it said.
While acknowledging that there was more to do, both leaders were pleased with the progress till date.
"This ongoing strategic dialogue between the two generals, supported by frequent discussions at lower levels, has enhanced the effectiveness of operations on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border," it said.
