China,Environment/Wildlife, Tue, 29 Jan 2013 IANS

Beijing, Jan 29 (IANS) The smog that has choked many Chinese cities, including Beijing, in recent days has affected a total area of 1.3 million square km, environment authorities said Tuesday.

The ministry of environmental protection said the hardest-hit regions were the cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Hefei, Wuhan and Chengdu as well as the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi and Jiangsu, Xinhua reported.

Many cities were termed by the ministry as "gravely polluted".

Meteorological authorities forecast that the haze will thin out by rain and snow Wednesday. However, smog will continue to linger.

Earlier this month, several days of hazy weather choked Beijing and other cities across the country.
