Deprived of cricket, Guyana elects new chief

Georgetown, Jan 29 (IANS/CMC) Dru Bahadur is the new president of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) as this country continues efforts to resolve a lingering dispute that has prevented it from hosting first class and international matches.

Bahadur, the lone nomination for the top position, was elected unopposed as president of the 12-member executive of the GCB when the body held its annual general meeting at the weekend.

He has taken over from Fizul Bacchus who acted in the position following the resignation of Ramsey Ali after contentious elections in 2011.

"I wish to thank the delegates for the confidence which they have placed in me and I want to assure that I will do my utmost for cricket and I will work with all stakeholders to ensure that the game develops and thrives," said Bahadur.

"My aim is to have all the county boards coming together so that we can work together in one common programme, and that is getting Guyana's cricket to where it belongs."

Bacchus and Alfred Mentore, president of the Demerara Cricket Club, were returned as vice presidents while returning to their respective positions as secretary and treasurer were Anand Sanasie and Anand Kalladeen.

Sanasie and Kalladeen were both appointed to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) last week after being nominated by the GCB.

The GCB also adopted a new constitution by unanimous vote of 18-0.

The disputed election had led to the Guyana government dissolving the GCB and replacing it with an interim management committee which the WICB had refused to recognise.

Last week, the WICB said it was pleased with the progress being made to resolve the impasse and announced that first class and international matches have been tentatively set for Guyana later this year.

Super50 and four-day matches have been scheduled for March while one of the Test matches between the West Indies and Pakistan is also slated for the Guyana National stadium in July.
