16 killed in Indonesia landslides

Jakarta, Jan 27 (IANS) At least 16 people died in two landslides triggered by heavy rains in Indonesia's Sumatra island Sunday, officials said.

The first disaster occurred around 6.45 a.m. in Agam district of West Sumatra, killing at least 11 people, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management and mitigation agency, told Xinhua.

The landslide hit 15 houses, trapping as many as 20 people under the debris, said Ade Edward, spokesman of the disaster management and mitigation agency in West Sumatra.

At least six people were injured while nine were missing.

The second landslide occurred around 2 p.m. when five workers of the PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, part of the country's state oil and gas firm PT Pertamina, were killed in Kerinci district of Jambi.

Heavy rains since Friday triggered floods and landslides in many parts of the region.
