170 held in Shanghai metro for ticketless travel

China,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Tue, 22 Jan 2013 IANS

Shanghai, Jan 22 (IANS) At least 172 people were detained here in China's commercial capital Tuesday for not buying metro tickets in a crackdown on ticket evaders ahead of China's spring festival.

Metro employees nabbed the ticket evaders during the rush hour in four busy stations, and fined them around 4,400 yuan in total, Shanghai Daily reported.

Officials said some passengers jumped over the gate while others were found using senior citizen cards or other fake certificates to dodge train fares.

A few people simply said they had no money for the train fare.

Shanghai's metro system transports about six million people a day.

The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals for the Chinese and is when all family members get together. The festival falls on the first day of the first lunar month, often just a month after the Christian calendar.
