Nairobi, Jan 21 (IANS) Nigeria and South Africa qualified to represent Africa in the men's and women's category during the forthcoming World Wheelchair Tennis Championships scheduled for May in Turkey.
During the Africa qualifying event Sunday that concluded here, Nigeria qualified through Jude Uwazie who beat Egypt's Hassan Mohammed 6-0, 6-2 whereas Yusuf Wasiu beat Aly Mohammed 6-4, 6-1 to seal it for the West Africans. They also won the doubles 6-3, 6-0 to make it a cumulative 3-0 for Nigeria, reports Xinhua.
Among women, South Africa beat Kenya 3-0 when Mankgele beat Jane Ndenga 6-0, 6-0 while Rose Van Der Meer beat Rahel Akoth by the same margin. They also won the doubles 6-1, 6-1.
Eight countries - hosts Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Mauritius, South Africa, Egypt, Ghana and Gambia took part in the three-day event.
International Tennis Federation (ITF) representative to the event Suzie Dyrbus lauded the high standards at the championships saying that Africa will give the rest of the contenders a run for their money during the outing in Turkey.
