London, Dec 25 (IANS) Margaret Thatcher, Britain's only woman prime minister, spent Christmas day in hospital, a spokesperson said.
The 87-year-old was operated on to remove a growth from her bladder and was in "good spirits", Sky News reported.
"I understand she is in good spirits. Given her age, I don't think she will be coming out for a few days," a spokesman said.
The veteran former prime minister's appearances in public have been very restricted over the past few recent years due to ill health.
Thatcher was unable to join Queen Elizabeth for lunch along with other former prime ministers during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this year.
Her health was thrust into the global spotlight this year when Meryl Streep starred in a Hollywood film about her.
"The Iron Lady" drew criticism from Prime Minister David Cameron for concentrating on the dementia Thatcher has suffered after a series of small strokes.
Thatcher was the first and only woman prime minister, serving between 1979 and 1990. She was also the first female leader of the Conservative Party.
