Moscow, Dec 23 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Moscow is preparing for the coldest night this year as temperatures may plunge to minus 26 degrees Celsius, the met officials said Sunday.
This year the coldest night in Moscow was registered Feb 3, when the night temperature fell to minus 24.6 degrees Celsius.
"The ongoing processes indicate this threshold will be breached on the night of Dec 23-24 and the air in Moscow will cool to minus 24-26 degrees Celsius.
"In some areas of Russia's Central district, the temperature may plunge to minus 36 degrees Celsius," the Fobos weather centre said Sunday.
On the previous night, the temperature in Moscow stayed at about minus 20 degrees Celsius. Biting cold compels Russians to make excessive use of heating devices such as electrical space heaters and furnaces, which increase the chances of house fires.
