Spanish airline expands service to Havana

Spain,Business/Economy, Fri, 21 Dec 2012 IANS

Madrid, Dec 21 (IANS/EFE) Spanish airline Air Europa said Thursday it will add three new weekly round-trip flights between Madrid and Havana starting April 1.

The announcement comes two weeks after another Spanish airline, Iberia, said it would end its long-haul service to Santo Domingo and the Cuban capital as part of a restructuring plan aimed at eliminating the most loss-making routes.

Air Europa currently operates one flight daily between the Madrid-Barajas airport and Havana's Jose Marti International Airport. Beginning April 1, the airline will expand that service by operating an additional round-trip flight on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The route will be operated using an Airbus 330-200 with seating for 299 passengers, 24 of them in business class.

Air Europa said it also has reached an agreement with the Dominican government to double its connections with the country's different airports starting April 1, when Iberia will stop operating flights to that destination.

Under the accord, Air Europa will double its flights to Santo Domingo's Las Americas International Airport from seven to 14 weekly frequencies and increase its weekly flights to Punta Cana - the Dominican Republic's premier tourist destination - from four to seven.
