China,Human Interest/Society, Fri, 21 Dec 2012 IANS

Beijing, Dec 21 (IANS) A kind of worm has become a major source of protein for some people in China which they either fry or grind into a powder before use.

People hailing from Ningbo in Zhejiang province serve worms to their children to improve appetite and protect the immune system, according to the Shanghai Daily.

The worms, about eight to nine centimetres long, live on the roots of a shrub called Yunshi in China.

In olden days, people traded one such worm for 10 kg rice. Today, one worm can cost up to 100 yuan (about $16). They are raised on rice, the paper said.

Agricultural expert Yao Yanhong said: "Traditional Chinese medicines recognise their curative properties and they smell and taste good after they are baked."
