Hanoi, Dec 21 (IANS) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will give a $251 million loan to help improve Vietnam's education, fight flood, drought and enhance power transmission.

ADB country director Tomoyuki Kimura said Vietnam saw rapid growth in the past two decades and future growth will depend on skilled labour force, reliable electricity supply, and the country's capacity to mitigate the risks posed by flood and drought.

According to ADB, a $90 million concessional loan will focus on improving tertiary and vocational career development, increasing access and retention of disadvantaged groups with a special focus on girl and ethnic minority students, Xinhua reported.

The second $110.19 million loan agreement represents the second tranche of the $730 million power transmission investment programme to Vietnam that ADB approved in 2011.

ADB provided a loan of $45 million to improve flood and drought risk management and mitigation and reduce economic losses in Vietnam.

The project will upgrade infrastructure in Vietnam's Dong Thap and Tien Giang provinces.
