Islamabad, Dec 18 (IANS) At least four women polio vaccination workers were Tuesday killed and two others injured in Pakistan's port city of Karachi, Geo News reported. Another polio volunteer was killed in Peshawar city earlier in the day.

The women were on duty in the city's Landhi and Orangi town areas when they were killed. Two of their male team members suffered injuries in the attack.

The killings occurred on the second day of a nationwide three-day drive against polio, which is endemic in Pakistan.

Condemning the attacks, Sindh province's Health Secretary Sageer Ahmed later halted the anti-polio drive in the city

Earlier Tuesday, a female worker of the anti-polio campaign was killed in Peshawar, prompting the World Health Organisation to recommend stopping the campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The 14-year-old volunteer was critically wounded when she was shot. She later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
