Washington, Fri, 14 Dec 2012 ANI

Washington, Dec. 14 (ANI): A top Vatican astronomer has confirmed that the world won't be ending in 10 days, despite predictions to the contrary by the Mayans.

"It's not even worth discussing" doomsday scenarios based on the Mayan calendar that are flooding the Internet ahead of the purported Dec. 21 apocalypse," the New York Post quoted Rev. Jose Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory, as saying.

According to the paper, in an article in a Vatican newspaper, Funes wrote, "the universe is expanding and if some models are correct, will at one point break away, but not for billions of years."

It comes after the Mayan Long Count calendar, which begins in 3,114 B.C., marking time in roughly 394-year periods known as Baktuns, indicated that the significant 13th Baktun ends Dec. 21, the paper said.

The panic of the of a possible world apocalypse has also prompted many people in countries such as the UK, China and Russia to flock for packaged food that are learnt to be lasting for upto 25 years. (ANI)
