India hasn't taken stand on rebel Syrians: Khurshid

India,Diplomacy, Thu, 13 Dec 2012 IANS

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Two days after the US recognized the Syrian opposition, India said Thursday it was cautiously studying the growing global approval for the rebel alliance against President Bashar al-Assad to see if "it fits in with our principles of non-interference".

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, answering a query on the sidelines of a conference here, said: "We are a bit cautious and studying it (growing global approval for the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces)... We have not taken a categorical position. We have a position of non-interference in internal matters.

"And this emerging widespread approval for the opposition in Syria, if it fits in with our principles of non-interference is something we will have to examine," said Khurshid.

President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that the US would recognize the coalition as Syria's legitimate representative in a move that had the backing of France, Britain, Turkey and Gulf states.

More than 100 countries and organizations forming part of the Friends of Syria alliance Wednesday gave recognition to the rebel coalition that is fighting to oust Assad.
