Johannesburg , Mon, 10 Dec 2012 ANI

Johannesburg, Dec 10 (ANI): 21-year-old Marilyn Ramos was crowned Miss South Africa 2012 on Sunday night.

Since last year's winner, Melinda Bam, was in Las Vegas taking part in the Miss Universe pageant, 2011's first princess Remona Moodley handed over the filigree silver and Swarovski crystal crown to the new queen, News24.com reported.

Ramos has revealed that she plans to help forge better relations between the country's youngsters and the aged as "the youth have a lot to learn from the elderly."

"I feel that the youth has a lot to learn from the elderly, and the seniors deserve the affection, compassion and respect of the youth," Ramos, from Pretoria, said.

"I intend to encourage young people to volunteer at old-age homes. I will achieve this by hosting workshops, motivational speeches and charity events.

"I will encourage the youth to visit retirement homes and hospice centres across the country," she said.

Ramos is an interior architecture student at Inscape Design College in Pretoria.

Stacey Webb, a 23-year-old law student from the Western Cape was named first princess, while Pearle Nxele was crowned second princess.

The Miss Congeniality prize was awarded to the Western Cape's 19-year-old Danelle De Wet. (ANI)
