Obama mourns death of Special Forces member during rescue mission in Afghanistan

Washington, Mon, 10 Dec 2012 ANI

Washington, Dec. 10 (ANI): President Barack Obama announced on Sunday that a member of the U.S. Special Forces was killed during a successful rescue mission in Afghanistan.

He praised the unnamed service member for his bravery and dedication to his country.

"Yesterday, our special operators in Afghanistan rescued an American citizen in a mission that was characteristic of the extraordinary courage, skill and patriotism that our troops show every day," Obama said.

"Tragically, we lost one of our special operators in this effort. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, just as we must always honor our troops and military families," the president said.

"He gave his life for his fellow Americans, and he and his teammates remind us once more of the selfless service that allows our nation to stay strong, safe and free," Obama said.

According to Politico, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) announced on Saturday that an American citizen, captured by the Taliban, had been rescued by NATO-led forces.

"Today's mission exemplifies our unwavering commitment to defeating the Taliban," General John Allen, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement.

"I'm proud of the American and Afghan forces that planned, rehearsed and successfully conducted this operation," he added. (ANI)
