Washington, Nov. 25 (ANI): Elite schools in the New York City are dominated by Asians and White students, but have a tiny percentage of black and Latino students, according to a report.
The revelation comes on the heels of an NAACP complaint filed last month over racial disparities at elite city high schools, such as Stuyvesant and Bronx Science.
According to the New York Daily News, for example, at the Anderson School in Manhattan, a gifted program that has the best test scores in the city, only 17 percent of the 569 students are black or Latino.
At Mark Twain in Brooklyn, which has its own admissions exam, 17 percent of 1,281 students are black or Latino.
At the 10 non-zoned schools whose kids produced the city's highest scores, just one in four students are black or Latino, the city data revealed.
"There are significant inequities in the quality of education and certainly the outcomes for students of color in the city's middle schools," Damon Hewitt, director of the education practice at the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund, said.
According to the report, the NAACP argued in its complaint about high schools with the U.S. Department of Education that some specialized high schools exclude minorities by using a single discriminatory exam. (ANI)
