Kuala Lumpur, Nov. 18 (ANI): The Malaysian Government will intensify its efforts to help the Indian community if given a new mandate to lead, country's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
Najib said that the government had done a lot, but it was still work in progress.
"If given a new mandate, we will increase our efforts," he said at the national-level Deepavali celebration at Ladang Infoternak.
Najib said boosting the education of the community remained a priority with RM500mil allocated for Tamil schools since 2009, the Star reports.
He said that six more Tamil schools had also been approved for Johor, Perak, Selangor and Kedah.
Najib said 6,590 Indians were given citizenship through the MyDaftar programme in February.
"One of them was a 70-year-old barber who had been applying for it since the 1960s. What pains me is that the barber had once cut my father's hair," he said.
According to the report, Najib said he had also met the Kampung Buah Pala villagers in Penang and they were grateful to the Barisan Nasional Government for building homes for them.
"The villagers were promised homes by Pakatan Rakyat but it was not done. Others make empty promises, we fulfil ours," he added. (ANI)
