London, Nov. 12 (ANI): A thief broke into the Tower of London and stole keys belonging to guards following an astonishing security blunder.
The raider crossed two huge gates then ransacked a metal box that was meant to have been locked at a sentry post.
He was spotted but amazingly escaped, as guards unable to leave their posts radioed for help, which were ignored.
The heavy bunch of keys included ones to unlock drawbridges plus others for conference rooms and the restaurant.
"Security was a total shambles. The burglar climbed over the Front Gate then got over another gate and found a metal box with the keys inside," a source said of the Bonfire Night burglary.
According to the Sun, Tower chiefs were forced to spend thousands urgently changing the locks.
Officials insisted that the Crown Jewels were never at risk of being stolen, but they admitted security procedures "were not carried out to the expected standard".
The iconic fortress, notorious for housing prisoners about to be beheaded, is famously guarded by the Yeoman Warders, or Beefeaters.
"A staff disciplinary procedure is under way," a spokesman for Historic Royal Palaces, which runs the Tower, said. (ANI)
