Charles Darwin gets 4,000 write-in votes in Georgia congressional race

London , Sun, 11 Nov 2012 ANI

London, Nov. 11 (ANI): Charles Darwin, the 19th-century British scientist who laid the foundations for the theory of evolution by natural selection, logged in 4,000 write-in votes in Georgia's 10th Congressional District.

Voters were encouraged to cast write-in ballots for Darwin after incumbent Republican Rep. Paul Broun called evolution and other areas of science 'lies straight from the pit of hell'.

Broun easily maintained his House seat, receiving 16,980 votes in Athens-Clarke County, and 209,917 votes across the district.

According to the New York Daily News, but a University of Georgia professor who helped organize the Darwin write-in campaign said the number of protest votes indicated that the congressman could face a tighter race with a live opponent.

"It's clear to me, and I hope everybody, that Paul Broun is vulnerable" in terms of continued re-election to Congress," Jim Leebens-Mack said. (ANI)
