Lahore, Nov. 10 (ANI): Chances are that the political cell of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) still exists since neither the prime minister has issued a notification for its closure nor a letter had been written for withdrawing the notification believed to have been issued in 1975, according to an official.
According to media reports, the political cell of the ISI was established in 1975 on a notification purportedly signed by the then prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and a similar notification by the executive head was required to close it, reports The Nation.
An ISI official has said that the political wing of the ISI no longer exists as it was dissolved when General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani took charge as ISI chief. He, however, avoided answering whether the present or previous government had issued an official order for shutting down the cell.
An official from the Cabinet Division - which is responsibility for such of kind of executive orders on behalf of the prime minister - has denied issuing any executive order to the ISI.
Though the cell exists on technical grounds, but some opposition politicians say that they do not think that the cell is still in operation.
"During the Musharraf regime, the ISI was quite active against our leaders and workers and it was apparent that the agency was directly involved in politics. But since Musharraf's ouster, a gradual decline could be felt in the political role of the ISI," said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Raja Zafarul Haq. (ANI)
