Blair urges European Union to 'elect President'

London, Tue, 30 Oct 2012 ANI

London, Oct 30 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has urged the European Union to have an elected president, just a few weeks after saying that he would be keen to take up the job.

Blair, who was tipped for such a post in 2009, said it should be created as part of a "grand bargain" of measures to restore confidence following the eurozone crisis.

"The only way confidence can be restored is with a fully comprehensive set of measures that convince markets and public alike that the fundamental issues have been overcome," the Daily Express quoted Blair, as saying.

"A Europe-wide election for the presidency of the Commission or Council is the most direct way to involve the public. An election for a big post held by one person, this people can understand," he said while addressing an audience of politicians in Berlin.

According to the report, Blair's remarks come after he hinted earlier this year that he would like to take up such a job, but not "at the moment".

"When it came up last time I would have taken it but I've no thought of stepping back into European politics at this moment," he had earlier told the BBC Radio 4. (ANI)
