Port-au-Prince, Oct 27 (IANS) Twenty people, including a woman and her four children, were killed in a hurricane that hit the Caribbean nation of Haiti, Xinhua reported Saturday.
The mother and her four children died after a landslide destroyed their home in Grand-Goave city, 48 km from capital city of Port-au-Prince, reported Haiti's Civil Protection Agency. The storm has been named Hurricane Sandy.
Congressman Gandy Dorfeuille confirmed the death of two people and damage to many plantations and roads in Saint-Louis area. Four others were found dead in Grand-Anse, Dame-Marie and Moron areas, reported Haiti Press Network.
At least nine people had died until Thursday while 10,000 others had been left displaced, Haiti's Interior and Territory Minister Ronsard Saint-Cyr said Friday, adding massive public and private infrastructure has been devastated.
The Cuban government Friday mobilised food, basic materials, medical and technical brigades to support victims in its eastern regions as Hurricane Sandy left 11 people dead while destryoing homes, schools and hospitals and also causing power outages.
According to US National Hurricane Centre, as man as 38 people died when the Sandy hurricane crossed the Caribbean sea.
