Car bomb blast damages church in eastern Syria

Damascus, Sat, 27 Oct 2012 ANI

Damascus, Oct. 27 (Xinhua-ANI): A booby-trapped car went off in front of al-Serian Church in Syria's eastern province of Deir al- Zour on Saturday, causing damages to the church's facade, the state-run SANA news agency reported.

There have been no reports on casualties by the blast, which is the latest in a series of explosions that rocked Syria during the first couple of days of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, which started on Friday.

A day earlier, two car bombs rocked the capital Damascus and the southern province of Daraa, leaving more than 20 people killed and many others injured.

The four-day holiday was supposed to be calm as both the Syrian army and the armed rebels said they had agreed on a cease-fire during the holiday. But on Friday, the Syrian army accused the armed rebels of violating the cease-fire, recounting, in details, all of the attacks that were carried out by the rebels during the day.

A rebel leader, based in Syria's northern province of Aleppo, reportedly said that the cease-fire, put forward by the UN-Arab League special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, was born dead and blamed the Syrian administration for being behind the faltering truce.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused the armed opposition of putting down the feast truce, SANA quoted the ministry as stating on Saturday. (Xinhua-ANI)
