Washington, Oct. 18 (ANI): Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's aides have criticized the second presidential debate's moderator, Candy Crowley, of being 'flat wrong' after she corrected a statement by him.
Crowley, a veteran CNN broadcaster, took the unusual step of contradicting Romney after he challenged President Barack Obama's response to the Sept 11 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
Facing criticism for initially blaming the attack on spontaneous protests, Obama said he had actually called it an 'act of terror' during his remarks at the White House the next day.
Romney suggested that this was not the case and asked Obama directly to restate the claim 'for the record'.
"Check the transcript," Obama replied.
According to the Telegraph, trying to avoid a dispute, Crowley told Romney: "He did, in fact, call it an 'act of terror'", but noted it also took the White House 'two weeks' to stop blaming protests against a film.
Claiming Crowley had 'skewed' the debate, Sean Spicer, a spokesman for Romney, said: "That's not her job - she interjected where she was not meant to".
Jen Psaki, a senior adviser to Obama, dismissed their opponents' complaints, saying: "Clearly the President was referring directly to the incident in Benghazi".
Crowley later defended her decision to intervene, but said that while Romney had been 'broadly right' in his criticism of the President, he 'used the wrong word', the report added. (ANI)
