China to spend 6 million yuan to open an atomic bomb site for tourists

New Delhi, Wed, 17 Oct 2012 NI Wire

A new tourist attraction in China is going to be added as China is reportedly planning to open the site where it detonated its first atomic bomb for tourists. It will be unique, as no such site has been opened till now.

China is spending around 6 million yuan ($960,000/£595,000) to make the remote Malan base in northwest Xinjiang region tourist-friendly.

This project is being developed by the local government and Tsinghua University in Beijing.

What people will be able to see on the site:

  • Visitors will be able to see scientists' laboratories and dormitories
  • A 300-metre tunnel used for air strikes.

China tested its first atomic bomb on 16 October 1964.

Since then more than 40 nuclear tests have been carried out in this area before a moratorium was called in the 1990s.
