London, Oct. 17 (ANI): A British diplomat has reportedly apologized after his tweet, which was in reference to a football chant that labeled Argentines as "gays and cowards", ended up going public.
Jon Benjamin, the Ambassador to Chile, tried to send a private tweet to a friend to tell him he had a ticket for tonight's World Cup qualifier between the South American neighbours.
However, the message, which contained a reference to a lewd terrace song labelling Argentines "gays" and "cowards", went public, the Daily Mirror reports.
According to the report, the chant by Chile soccer fans runs as, "Argentines, gays, they took the Falklands off you because you are cowards" in rhyming Spanish slang every time the two sides play against each other."
In reference to this, Benjamin, overjoyed at the prospect of attending their meet at Chile's national stadium, tweeted in Spanish: "Which islands did they take off who and for being what? Perhaps I'll discover the answer at the national stadium. I've already got my ticket"
Angry Argentines took to the web shortly after, criticizing the diplomat, following which Benjamin issued an apology, the report said.
"I'm sorry I offended with a private message that I published by mistake. I feel great affection for my Argentine friends and respect for their national side," Benjamin said. (ANI)
