'Extremism, not multiculturalism' blamed for Sydney riots over anti-Islam film

Sydney, Mon, 15 Oct 2012 ANI

Sydney, Oct 15 (ANI): Extremism, not multiculturism, was the reason behind last month's violent protests across Sydney against the anti-Islamic film produced in the US, Australia's immigration department has said.

The remarks by Martin Bowles, acting secretary of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Martin Bowles, came while commenting on the outbreak of violence on September 15 over the film 'The Innocence of Muslims', that has outraged the Muslim world.

According to the Herald Sun, Bowles stressed that Australia's model of multiculturalism was the best in the world and something all its citizens could be proud of.

"We were all shocked by the violent protests in Sydney" the paper quoted Bowles, as saying.

"However, it is important to realise that Australia's multiculturalism is bigger and stronger than what happened in Sydney," he said.

"This was extremism, not multiculturalism," he added. (ANI)
