Rio de Janeiro, Oct 8 (IANS) Chile international playmaker Jorge Valdivia will be sidelined for the rest of the year after suffering a knee injury during Palmeiras' 0-3 loss to Sao Paulo in Brazil's Serie A football championship.
Palmeiras officials confirmed Sunday the 28-year-old ruptured medial ligaments in his left knee in a clash with Sao Paulo's Paulo Miranda, reports Xinhua.
He will miss the rest of Palmeiras' 2012 league campaign as well as Chile's 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Argentina later this month.
Palmeiras are currently in the relegation zone, six points from safety with 10 matches remaining.
The Sao Paulo outfit last month sacked Brazil's 2002 World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, replacing him with former national under-20 boss Ney Franco.
