Rio de Janeiro, Oct 6 (IANS) Carlos Nuzman, the man behind Rio de Janeiro's successful Olympic bid three years ago, has been re-elected as president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee for a fifth straight term.

The 70-year-old lawyer was voted as the preferred candidate by 30 of 831 local sports confederations during a ballot in Rio de Janeiro Friday, reports Xinhua.

Following his election victory, Nuzman, who is also president of Rio's Olympic organising committee, promised to help Brazil finish among the top 10 medal winners in 2016.

"This is a mission for the country, which will be accomplished along with the federal, state and city governments, as well as with the confederations and all of those who love sports," said Nuzman, who participated at the 1964 Tokyo Games as a volleyball player.

Nuzman's critics include former Brazil striker and politician Romario, who this week called for a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of corruption related to the tender of a Rio Games ticket sales contract.
