Cuba's forest cover rises

Cuba,Environment/Wildlife, Thu, 04 Oct 2012 IANS

Havana, Oct 4 (IANS) Cuba Wednesday said its forest cover had increased to 27.3 percent from 13.4 percent in 1959.

According to the National Statistic Bureau, the afforestation rate in the western province of Pinar del Rio and the eastern province of Guantanamo reached 44 percent and 42.7 percent respectively, reported Xinhua.

Cuba is implementing strategies to reach the goal of 29-percent forest coverage in 2015.

The island country is establishing agro-forest systems to increase the amount of trees, a way to reduce land erosion and preserve biodiversity.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the world loses over 130,000 square km of forests every year, mainly caused by unsustainable deforestation, the conversion to agricultural land, and new human settlements.
