Washington, Oct 1 (ANI): The Obama administration is planning a stepped-up counter terrorism campaign against Al-Qaeda's affiliate in North Africa in response the attack on the American consulate in Libya, which killed four US official, it has emerged.
According to current and former American officials, the Obama administration is considering additional deployments of Predator or Reaper drones to supplement those already in the region.
Officials said the military also is considering ways to increase counterterrorism training with North African militaries, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The officials stressed that the purpose of the efforts would be to help governments in North Africa suppress Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, known as AQIM, and other militant groups.
"There are a lot of ideas being explored about how to step up our game against AQIM," the paper quoted a U.S. official, as saying.
According to the paper, the move reinforces the view now prevalent among intelligence and military officials that Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb played a prominent role in the consulate attack in Benghazi on September 11.
The attack led to the death of killed four Americans, including Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya. (ANI)
