Dalai Lama hopes China's new rulers will offer better approach to Tibetan conundrum

London, Fri, 28 Sep 2012 ANI

London, Sep. 28 (ANI): Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has expressed hope that the new Chinese leadership will offer a new and better approach on issues related to Tibet.

According to the BBC, the Dalai Lama said this at a meeting of global representatives of the exiled Tibetan movement. He said the self-immolations were a symptom of China's repressive rule in Tibet, and called on its new leadership to accept the need for change.

"The new leadership must use common sense and a more holistic view to serve long term-interests. There is no other way," the report quoted him, as saying.

"Just using force, censorship and to remain a closed society is almost like suicide. Judging that way, I feel there is possibility or a real chance to change," he added.

There is growing concern over the number of Tibetans self-immolating or setting themselves on fire in various parts of China.

According to activists, at least 51 Tibetans have set themselves on fire since 2009. (ANI)
