Prince William seeks RAF's approval to join Harry in Afghan frontline

London, Sun, 23 Sep 2012 ANI

London, Sep 23 (ANI): Prince William has reportedly expressed his desire to join his brother Harry on the front line in Afghanistan.

According to a Whitehall defence source, William has told RAF (Royal Air Force) bosses to get him to the war zone for some active service. Although the proposal has previously been thought of as madness, the insider said military officials are considering how to make it happen.

Wills, 30, was spurred on after hearing of Harry's daring exploits in Camp Bastion, including last week's Taliban raid on the site.

"The brothers are in touch nearly every day but every time William hears from Harry he is left feeling really envious of all his Afghan adventures and wants to share in the action. William is a serving officer and has said he wants to go," the Daily Star quoted a source, as saying.

"Although the rule is he cannot be placed in harm's way, they are seeing if they can bring it about before next spring when he has to decide if he's staying on or leaving the Forces to be a full-time royal," the source added.

William, who is an RAF search and rescue pilot flying Sea King helicopters from Anglesey and has done a six-week tour of the Falklands earlier this year, would have to train on Merlin choppers before being deployed to Afghanistan.

A St James's Palace source said: "The Prince has to decide before the end of the year and will make that decision with his wife.

"He surprised us all when he said he wanted to be a search and rescue pilot. It was entirely his own idea. I would not put it past him to come up with something none of us thought of," the source added. (ANI)
