London, Sep 18 (IANS) Two air stewards of an Irish low-cost airline have been caught trying to smuggle around 13,800 cigarettes in their bags, a media report said.
Gemma Phillips, 26, and Adam McEvatt, 28, were stopped by customs after flying in to Britain from Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, The Sun reported.
Phillips had been visiting McEvatt, who lived on the Spanish holiday island for four days a week.
She was found at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport to have 2,000 cigarettes in one bag with 5,800 in a suitcase.
McEvatt was stopped five minutes later with 6,000 cigarettes. Neither of them were on duty and both quit their jobs after disciplinary proceedings.
Both the accused have admitted evading a total 3,500 pounds in tax duty at a Manchester magistrates' court.
