Sydney, Sept 13 (ANI): A 56-year-old man holding an Indian passport in Australia is facing court action in relation to the alleged genital mutilation of two female children.
Sheikh Shabbir Vaziri has been charged with two counts of accessory after the fact of female genital mutilation and hindering investigation of a serious indictable offence emerged..
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, police will allege that the two girls had the procedure, also called female circumcision, performed on them in New South Wales when they were aged six and seven within the past 18 months.
Vaziri, who was arrested today, appeared in Burwood Local Court and was granted bail.
The judge noted that the 'overwhelming majority of the community would consider [it] a most serious set of circumstances'.
He, however, said there was a presumption in favour of bail for the offence, and that Vaziri did not have any prior criminal history.
According to the repot, the police prosecutor opposed bail, saying that the sheikh ' 'was a flight risk'.
"The accused has an Indian passport and was about to depart," the prosecutor said. (ANI)
