Minister's racist 'Jihad Jackie' remark sparks outrage in Queensland Parliament

sydney , Wed, 12 Sep 2012 ANI

Sydney, Sept. 12 (ANI): An Australian politician has caused a racist storm in parliament after he addressed opposition environment spokeswoman Jackie Trad as 'Jihad Jackie'.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman then accused Trad of having 'a glass jaw' and told her to seek an apology from leader of the house Ray Stevens

Trad, of Catholic Lebanese heritage, said outside Parliament that Stevens' gibe was not just an insult to her, but to all ethnic groups and called on him to apologize.

"This is going too far for someone in his position," the Courier Mail quoted Trad, as saying.

"For him to infer anyone of Lebanese extraction is somehow involved in acts of war is to attack many Queenslanders," Trad added.

"And this is from a government that told voters it will be humble and govern for all Queenslanders. It was a pretty low standard for Parliament to reach," she added.

Stevens withdrew the comment after urging from Speaker Fiona Simpson, but outside Parliament said that he will not apologize to Trad or others because his comments were not racist. (ANI)
