'Future Chinese leader' Xi Jinping's 'unknown whereabouts' sparks rumours

London, Tue, 11 Sep 2012 ANI

London, Sep 11 (ANI): Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping's sudden absence from the political scene has triggered a wave of rumours on various news sites and Twitter, ranging from his possible involvement in a car accident to a power struggle.

Speculation has been mounting about the whereabouts of Jinping, who has not been seen for over a week.

He failed to attend an important Communist party gathering last week and also cancelled a meeting with the visiting Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, which marks his fourth missed appointment within a week, the BBC reports.

Xi is expected to be appointed the nation's new leader at the National Congress of the Communist Party of China next month, but no date has been set, which has fuelled reports that power struggles in the leadership have yet to be resolved, the report said.

Xi has also missed appointments with Singapore's prime minister and a Russian official, the report added.

A spokesman for China's foreign ministry repeatedly evaded questions about Xi's absence, saying he had "no information" to provide. (ANI)
