Geneva, Sept. 10 (Xinhua-ANI): The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday commended the UN Human Rights Council for acting quickly in response to the crisis in Syria.
"While the Security Council has been divided on the situation, the General Assembly and this Council have acted," he said when addressing the council which began its 21st session.
Ban said he was deeply troubled by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and by the "apparent choice of both sides to pursue a solution through force instead of dialogue."
"I urge all involved to unite behind the diplomatic efforts of Joint Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi," he said.
He also encouraged the HRC to maintain its vigilance on Syria, saying that "we must ensure that anyone, on any side, who commits war crimes, crimes against humanity or other violations of international human rights or humanitarian law is brought to justice."
He also expressed concerns over human rights situations in other parts of the world, including the crisis in Mali and the unfulfilled human rights of the Palestinian people.
He called all states to engage and cooperate with UN human rights mechanisms. (Xinhua-ANI)
