Fake fortune teller jailed in Shanghai

China,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Mon, 10 Sep 2012 IANS

Shanghai, Sep 10 (IANS) A bogus woman fortune teller has been sentenced to around four years behind bars for swindling a woman here in the Chinese business hub of 190,000 yuan (around $30,000), a media report said Monday.

The Huangpu district people's court said the convict, Li A'xiang, met the victim in the city's Jade Buddha Temple in 2004 and said she could tell her fortune by reading her face, the Shanghai Daily reported.

The fortune teller warned the woman that a tragic accident would soon befall her husband and child, prosecutors said.

The frightened woman asked Li how to avoid the bad luck. She asked for money to buy incense and perform prayers to help her shake off the bad luck.

She also asked for the woman's phone number in order to tell her the result, the court heard.

A week later, the woman fortune teller called the victim and demanded around 20,000 yuan more to destroy the bad luck, or one of her relatives would meet with a car accident.

Prosecutors said the woman used the same trick to rip off the victim 39,000 yuan and 132,000 yuan in the following two months and then disappeared.

The trickster was caught by police in Wuxi city of Jiangsu province in November.
