Lahore, Sept. 7 (ANI): American lawyer Sara Bilal has said that the Pakistan Government has disappointed the families of prisoners by not standing by the agreement to hand over control of the prison control to Afghanistan.
Bilal, who is acting as the counsel for the families of Pakistani prisoners, said 39 out of 50 foreigners held in the prison were Pakistanis, but neither the United States nor Afghanistan have taken Pakistan on board in the process. She said being a big stakeholder, the Pakistan Government should have taken up the matter with the American and Afghan authorities for the release of its citizens, reports The Express Tribune.
She said the families of the prisoners were concerned about Islamabad's 'cold attitude' on the matter.
She said the only option that these families were left with was to approach a court and ask it to direct the government to take initiatives for the release of its citizens.
"The government, at least, can try to ensure that Pakistani prisoners are treated equally," she said.
According to Bilal, Afghanistan and the United States had signed an agreement on March 9, under which the U.S. said it would hand over the control of the prison to the Afghan authorities on September 9.
Referring to a report of the Open Society Foundation, Bilal said it suggested that the U.S. would maintain control of a portion of the prison and would continue arresting more Pakistanis. She said only the Pakistan Government could take an initiative for Pakistani prisoners, who were 'otherwise being treated inhumanly'. (ANI)
