Washington, Sep 1 (IANS) New orders for US manufactured goods rose 2.8 percent in July, indicating that the US manufacturing sector was gaining momentum, the US Department of Commerce reported.

In July, US factory orders increased to a seasonally adjusted $478.6 billion, following a revised 0.5-percent decrease in June, reported Xinhua.

New orders for durable goods, or big-ticket items expected to last at least three years such as computers, cars and machinery, rose 4.1 percent to $230.5 billion in July.

New orders for nondurable goods, including food, paper products, petroleum and coal products, increased 1.5 percent to $248.1 billion for the month.

The recovery of the manufacturing sector has served as a main engine of the US economic growth in recent years.
