Rio de Janeiro, Aug 25 (IANS) Dutch star Clarence Seedorf has urged Rio football fans to show restraint during Sunday's local derby between Botafogo and Flamengo at the Engenhao Stadium.
Seedorf said he was saddened and concerned by the death of a Vasco da Gama supporter during a clash with hooligans before last Sunday's Vasco-Flamengo duel at the same venue, reports Xinhua.
"Supporters have to realize that this is just a football game," the former AC Milan midfielder said Friday. "Of course there is a rivalry between the teams but it has to be sporting.
"There are places that have real wars where people kill each other due to their different beliefs. We don't have to have that in football. One team without the other isn't anything at all."
Botafogo is currently in seventh place in Brazil's Serie A standings with 27 points from 18 matches, two points ahead of Flamengo, which has a game in hand.
